Jambo Means Hello: Swahili Alphabet Book
|Author:||Muriel Feelings, Tom Feelings|
Muriel and Tom Feelings, author and illustrator of the Caldecott Honor Book, Moja Means One: Swahili Counting Book, have now collaborated on a companion volume—a Swahili alphabet book.
Mrs. Feelings, who has lived and taught in East Africa, has written a simple but informative text. Selecting twenty-four words, one for each letter of the Swahili alphabet, she gives children a simple lesson in the Swahili language while familiarizing them with some important aspects of traditional East African life.
Award-winning illustrator Tom Feelings has provided a beautifully detailed doublespread painting for each letter, ranging from a traditional greeting between friends to a wedding scene.
A map of Africa showing the countries where Swahili is spoken is also included.

Here is an introduction not only to the letters of the alphabet, but also to another language and culture. Each of the twenty-four letters (there are no q or x sounds in Swahili) is represented by a Swahili word, a clear phonetic pronunciation guide, and an explanation of how the word fits into African life. Gorgeous pencil and ink illustrations help give young African-Americans a glimpse of their heritage.
