During the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, 103 librarians responded to a call for a "Convention of Librarians" at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. In attendance were 90 men and 13 women from as far west as Chicago and from England. The aim of the Association was "to enable librarians to do their present work more easily and at less expense."

The American Library Association Constitution states the purpose of ALA as, “to promote library service and librarianship.” The stated mission is, “To provide leadership for the development, promotion and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all.”

The ALA annually confers numerous notable book and media awards, some of which appear in the Award Annals. The winners and honors are chosen each January at the midwinter meeting. Some are administered by ALA divisions such as:

  • Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA),
  • Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC)
  • Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT)
