Winner of the 1994 Carnegie Medal. Link, 17 years old and driven from his parental home, has drifted to London, jobless and friendless. He meets Deb, a homeless girl, who gives him some meaning in life. He doesn't realize that Deb is a journalist hunting a serial killer who preys on the homeless.

A group of street children, who survive on sorting through the rubbish on a tip for Mother Shelly, get involved in a baby kidnap. If they can return the baby and claim the reward they will be able to start a new life. But this story of dreams ends in disaster.

Tod has no memories of his past. But he decides to escape his brutal present by leaving. A destination "over the hills and far away" slowly takes shape in his mind and from this point the reader is drawn into Tod's world, into an eventful journey and the painful recollections of a lost past.
