Golden Globe nominations are announced in mid-December by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association®, and the winners announced in mid-January during the broadcast ceremony.

Eligible films must be screened for active HFPA members (not necessarily a private screening, but all active members must receive an invitation) and released in the Los Angeles area. In December, each active member chooses up to five nominees in each category from a ballot of all eligible films. The top five are placed on the final ballot.

The HFPA is an association of about 90 journalists based in Southern California. They disseminate information about movies and television to the world through their various publications throughout the world. HFPA members attend more than 300 press conference-style interviews and countless movie and television screenings throughout each year.
