Ilse Koehn is classified a Mischling, second degree citizen in Nazi Germany. Although Ilse doesn’t know it, her grandmother is Jewish. Ilse’s parents teach her to pretend to be a loyal German, and she join the Hitler Youth Movement. During the war, she is sent to evacuation camps to avoid the constant bombing in Berlin, scrounges for food with her grandmother, and hides with her mother from Russian soldiers.
