When big-league ballplayers return from the war, unhappy with the contracts the club owners offer them, the wealthy Pasquel brothers pay unheard-of salaries to lure disaffected players—Sal Maglie, Vern Stephens, Danny Gardella, Max Lanier among them—to Mexico.
